Why this road
Here the scenic road and the fastest road are almost the same, and that is good news: the D1 is a calm country road through woods and meadows, with few towns and little traffic outside summer. The highlight on the way is Rastoke in Slunj, a small version of Plitvice where the Slunjčica tumbles into the Korana between houses and mills. It is the perfect warm-up for the lakes.
The route
- AKarlovac
Leave the town of four rivers to the south on the D1, signposted Slunj and Plitvice.
- 1Krnjak
A small village in the hills. The road runs through fields and woods, with long, easy curves.
- 2Rastoke
Below the old town of Slunj, the Slunjčica falls into the Korana over mossy steps between wooden mills. Park in Slunj and walk down.
- 3Rakovica
The last village before the park, with guesthouses and the Barać caves nearby. The forest gets thicker from here.
- BPlitvice Lakes
Entrance 1, right by the Great Waterfall and the lower lakes. From here the paths lead down into the canyon.
Stops worth it
Forty-five minutes to walk between the mills and over the little bridges. Some of the houses are private, the main viewpoints are signposted.
Light and the best time
The road runs mostly south, so in the morning the sun is on your left and a little behind you. Leave Karlovac around 7 and you reach Rastoke in soft light, with mist often still hanging over the Korana. At the lakes the water is most colourful when the sun is high, but the paths are most peaceful in the first hours after opening. Arriving early is worth more than perfect light.
Spring is the time for the waterfalls: from April to June they carry the most water and the woods are fresh green. September and October bring autumn colours and fewer people. July and August are hot and very crowded at the lakes, so arrive at opening time. The road is open all year; in winter the park is quiet and sometimes frozen, but some paths may be closed.
By vehicle
An easy drive on a good two-lane road. The main thing is to arrive early enough to find space in the park car parks.
Gentle curves and little traffic outside summer, a relaxed ride rather than a sporty one.
Pleasant on a warm spring or autumn morning through the woods. It can be chilly early in the day.
No problem on the D1. There are campsites near the park, and the main car parks have room for campers.
Good to know
No toll on the D1. The Plitvice Lakes are a national park with an entrance fee and paid parking; in high season tickets can be limited, so buy them online in advance on the park's website. In Rastoke, park in Slunj and walk down, the lanes are narrow. Fuel up in Karlovac or Slunj. Stay on the marked paths in the park and do not swim, it is not allowed.
