Rijeka to Karlobag: the Adriatic coast road under the Velebit

The Jadranska magistrala, the Adriatic coast road, runs the whole length of Croatia. Its northern part from Rijeka to Karlobag is the wildest: past the beach towns of the Vinodol coast to Senj, then along the foot of the Velebit, with Krk, Rab and Pag lying in the sea to your right.

The drive, minute by minute

Example: leaving at 15:00 on a day in September. Drag along the strip.

Why this road

Here the coast road is the road: the motorway runs far inland, and the D8 sticks to the shore the whole way. After Senj the towns thin out, the mountain drops straight into the sea, and for long stretches it is just you, the grey limestone and the islands. It is a road of curves, not of speed, and it is best taken slowly with the windows down.

The route

  1. A
    Rijeka

Leave the port city to the south-east on the D8. After Bakar bay and the turn to the Krk bridge, the coast opens up.

  2. 1
    Crikvenica

The biggest beach town on this stretch, with a long promenade. Across the channel lies the island of Krk.

  3. 2
    Novi Vinodolski

An old town on a low hill above the sea. From here the road climbs a little and the views get wider.

  4. 3
    Senj

A small port with the Nehaj fortress above the roofs. This is the gateway to the bura coast, the wind often blows hardest from here south.

  5. 4
    Sveti Juraj

A quiet village by the water. From here on the road clings to the foot of the Velebit, with Rab and later Pag across the sea.

  6. B
    Karlobag

A little harbour town under the mountain, where the road to Gospić climbs inland over the Velebit.

Stops worth it

Senj

Walk up to the Nehaj fortress for the view along the coast and over to Krk. Forty minutes is enough for the fortress and a coffee by the harbour.

Light and the best time

Driving south, the sea and the islands are on your right, to the west. In the morning the sun is behind the Velebit and the coast lies in shade with a hazy, silvery sea. From mid-afternoon the sun moves over the islands: the water starts to sparkle, the bare slopes on your left turn warm, and towards evening the sun sets behind Krk and Rab. Start in the afternoon so the second half, after Senj, falls into the golden hour. Glare off the sea can be strong late in the day, keep sunglasses handy.

May, June, September and October are best: warm, clear and without the summer traffic. In July and August the beach towns around Crikvenica are busy and slow. The road is open all year, but the bura, a cold north-east wind that falls off the Velebit, can be very strong, especially in winter. During bura the road between Senj and Karlobag can be closed to some vehicles, check the current traffic reports before you go.

By vehicle

Convertible

Lovely with the roof down on a calm day. If the bura is blowing, close the roof and think twice: gusts here can be violent.

Motorbike

Endless curves along the water, mostly with a good surface. Watch for gravel in the corners and take strong wind seriously, sometimes motorbikes are not allowed through.

Car

Easy for any car. The road is two lanes but winding, and overtaking chances are rare, so relax and enjoy the views.

Camper van

Doable, as long as you take your time and let traffic pass in the lay-bys. Campers are among the first vehicles stopped when the bura blows, so check the forecast.

Good to know

No toll on the D8. Fuel is easy to find in Rijeka, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski and Senj, but there is little after Senj, so fill up there. Parking in the towns is often paid in summer. Watch for the bura warnings on the road and on the radio. The road has many blind curves, so drive at a speed where you can stop.

Questions

How long does it take to drive from Rijeka to Karlobag on the coast road?

About 2.5 to 3 hours of pure driving for roughly 130 km. With a stop in Senj and a few photo breaks, plan half a day.

Is the Adriatic coast road D8 a toll road?

No, the D8 is free. Only the motorways in Croatia have tolls, and this route does not use them.

What is the bura and when does it close the road?

A cold, gusty wind from the north-east that drops off the Velebit onto the coast. In strong bura the road between Senj and Karlobag can be closed for motorbikes, campers, trailers or all traffic. It is more common in winter, but it can blow in any season, so check the traffic reports.

Is the coast road or the motorway better from Rijeka to the south?

The motorway is faster if you are heading far south. If you have time, the coast road is the one to drive: it stays by the sea the whole way, while the motorway runs inland.
