Why this road
The direct road from Lagos to Aljezur cuts inland in half an hour and never sees the sea. This route is about three times as long and is the whole point: Sagres and its fortress, the lighthouse on the cape with the Atlantic on three sides, and then a quiet road through the natural park with side roads down to beaches like Bordeira and Amado. It is the wildest stretch of coast in southern Portugal.
The route
- ALagos
Leave Lagos to the west on the N125. The road runs through low hills and farmland towards Vila do Bispo, then turns south to Sagres.
- 1Sagres
A small surf town on a windy headland, with the old fortress on its cliff-top plateau. Follow the road west to the cape.
- 2Cabo de São Vicente
The lighthouse on the cape, with cliffs dropping straight into the Atlantic. Stalls sell coffee and the famous last sausage before America.
- 3Vila do Bispo
Back through the village, then north on the road through the Costa Vicentina natural park, with heath and pine on both sides.
- 4Carrapateira
A small village above the huge Bordeira beach. A loop road along the cliffs to Praia do Amado is well worth the detour.
- BAljezur
A white town on a hill by a river valley, with a ruined Moorish castle on top. The beaches of Monte Clérigo and Arrifana are close by.
Stops worth it
Half an hour at the lighthouse and along the cliffs. It is very windy, hold on to hats and phones.
Drive the cliff road from the village to the viewpoints over Bordeira and Amado, and watch the surfers. Half an hour, or the rest of the afternoon.
Light and the best time
The coast faces west and south-west, so it belongs to the afternoon. Leave Lagos around 3 pm: you reach the cape in strong, warm light with the sun over the sea, and the cliffs and beaches north of Vila do Bispo are front-lit from the west on your left. Around sunset the cliffs turn gold and the sea glitters. The sunset at the cape itself is famous and very busy; the viewpoints above Bordeira are a quieter place to watch it. In the morning the west coast lies in the shade of its own cliffs and looks flat.
March to June and September to October are best: green heath and flowers in spring, warm sea and fewer people in autumn. July and August are busy around Sagres and on the beaches, and parking at the cape is hard at sunset. The roads are open all year. Wind is common on this coast in every season, and sea fog can hang over it on summer mornings.
By vehicle
Great with the roof down on a calm day, with the smell of pine and sea. Bring a jacket, the wind at the cape is cold even in summer.
Easy, flowing roads with little traffic north of Vila do Bispo. Strong side winds at the cape and on the open heath are the main thing to watch.
A relaxed drive on good roads. The side roads to the beaches are narrow, some unpaved, so take them slowly.
Fine on the main roads. Overnight parking and camping outside campsites and designated areas is restricted, especially in the natural park, so check the current rules before you go.
A good scooter trip on quiet roads, but the wind on the open plateau can be tiring. Plan breaks in Sagres and Carrapateira.
Good to know
No toll on this route: it uses the N125 and the coast road, not the A22 motorway, which has electronic tolls. Fuel is easy in Lagos, Sagres and Vila do Bispo, rarer further north. Parking at the cape and at popular beaches is limited in summer. The coast is a protected natural park, so stick to marked tracks and parking areas.
Route checked against OpenStreetMap on 2 November 2026. Roads, closures and rules change: always check before you go and follow local signs.
Questions
How long is the drive from Lagos to Aljezur via Sagres?
About 2 hours of pure driving for roughly 95 km, compared to about half an hour on the direct inland road. With stops at the cape and the beaches, plan an afternoon.
Is Cabo de São Vicente the most south-westerly point of Europe?
It is the south-western tip of mainland Europe, and the lighthouse there is one of the most powerful in Europe. It is also one of the windiest places on the Algarve.
Are there tolls on the Algarve west coast?
Not on this route. The A22 motorway along the Algarve has electronic tolls, but this drive uses the N125 and the coast roads, which are free.
Where is the best sunset on the Algarve west coast?
Cabo de São Vicente is the classic, but it gets crowded. The cliff viewpoints above Bordeira and Amado near Carrapateira, or Arrifana near Aljezur, are quieter.
